Standard we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Some colour choices on the dark canvas go further than that. This is not a claim that a third party has audited the whole site. It is what the pages are built to do.

What you can do on every page

• Skip to content — the first link on every page, visible when you tab to it.
• Keyboard — menus, the theme toggle, cookie choices and the contact form can be used without a mouse. Focus is marked with a yellow outline.
• Dark or light — a toggle in the header. The choice is remembered in your browser. The site does not follow the operating system automatically, because that would hide the brand from most visitors; the toggle is there instead.
• Reduced motion — if your device asks for reduced motion, animations stop. On the home page there is also a Pause motion button for the Critter Wall, and that choice is remembered.
• Text — you can enlarge text in the browser. Copy is written in plain English, not in a dense legal register, including on these policy pages.
• Images — photographs have alternative text. Decorative repeats of the same animal on the home page are hidden from screen readers so each animal is announced once.

Colour and contrast

Accent colours on the dark background were chosen to clear a contrast ratio of 7.96:1, which is WCAG AAA for normal text. Light theme uses darker versions of the same accents. Do not take that as a promise that every possible combination on every page has been measured by an external auditor.

Known limits

• Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts. If that third-party request fails, the browser falls back to system fonts and the layout still works.
• Some photographs show a child’s hands with an animal. Faces are not the subject. If a particular image is a problem, tell us and we can describe it another way.
• Embedded maps are not used. Addresses are written as text.
• The contact form uses Formspree. If the form fails, the same page lists the phone number and email so you are not stuck.

The services, not only the site

Sessions are child-led. Nothing is compulsory: a child may watch from the doorway. Parents may stay in the room. School workshops are designed so no child is made to hold something in front of the class, and leaving and coming back is allowed. Camps have somewhere quieter to go. If you need an adjustment for a visit — timing, lighting, a parent staying, a written rather than spoken confirmation — say so when you get in touch.

If you are not satisfied, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service, or raise a complaint under the Equality Act 2010. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has guidance on the accessibility regulations that apply to UK service providers.
